Fennel Seeds
Foeniculum vulgare, or as it's commonly called Fennel, is a medicinal and culinary plant from the Apiaceae family. This medicinal spice originated in the Mediterranean; however, it is now cultivated around the world. The fennel plant thrives in tropical and temperate regions, growing up to 2 metres in height. This medicinal spice can survive in a variety of soil types, such as sandy, loam and clay, as long as there is proper drainage.

The fennel plant is drought-tolerant thanks to its long, deep taproot. It has feathery, dissected leaves with yellow flowers. Fennel seeds are small, oblong-shaped and pale grey-green in colour. They are highly aromatic and offer a slightly spicy, warm and sweet flavour.

How Fennel Seeds are Used in Traditional Medicine
Now, let's take a look at how fennel seeds are used in traditional medicine. Chewing dry-roasted fennel seeds after a meal stimulates salivary flow, helps prevent bloating and freshens breath. Similarly, adding 1 teaspoon of crushed fennel seeds to water and drinking the tea helps relieve gas, indigestion, nausea and abdominal pain.

Besides that, consuming fennel seeds can help flush out toxins from the body. In addition, consuming fennel seeds can ease menstrual cramps and pain associated with hernias. Furthermore, this medicinal spice can also help promote the production of breast milk in nursing mothers.

3. Antimicrobial properties
Research done on fennel seeds shows that this medicinal spice contains a compound that significantly inhibits the growth of bacteria, except for Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as fungi.

4. Supports healthy digestion
According to research studies, fennel seeds have demonstrated evidence supporting digestive health by improving digestion, preventing bloating, increasing appetite and promoting feelings of fullness. Besides that, this medicinal spice can help relieve abdominal pain and protect against stomach ulcers.

5. Protect the heart
Research done on fennel seeds shows that this medicinal spice can significantly decrease total cholesterol levels, low-density lipoprotein levels and triglyceride levels in the human body. Apart from that, several other studies also demonstrate that fennel seeds can contribute to preventing lipid deposition in blood vessels, consequently promoting healthy blood circulation.
