Roselle Leaves
Roselle leaves come from the family Malvaceae and originate from West Africa. Nevertheless, it is currently extensively cultivated around the world in countries such as Sudan, Egypt, Malaysia, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Brazil, Australia, and the US.


This medicinal herb thrives in tropical, warm and humid climates. Roselle plant is an annual herb growing up to 3.5m tall with an erect reddish stem. The leaves sprout alternately on the stem and are usually 15 cm long. The flowers are between 8 and 10 cm in diameter and vary from white to pale yellow with a dark red spot at the base of each petal and consist of a stout fleshy calyx at the base. When the flower matures, it turns fleshy and bright red.


The Roselle plant requires adequate water and sunlight throughout the day; therefore, it can grow in tropical climates. Although the calyx holds valuable medicinal components and contains plenty of health benefits, the leaves of the Roselle plant are also renowned as a medicinal herb with its nutritional properties to enhance health and well-being. Roselle leaves have a sour and tangy taste, which is great to enhance the flavour of a savoury dish. 




The Sour and Tangy Herb in Traditional Medicine
Based on traditional medicine, Roselle leaves are notable for their cooling nature to the body. The leaves are utilized as a detox agent to eliminate excess heat from the body, treat fevers and sore throats. In addition to that, Roselle leaves are rich in fibre; hence used to treat constipation, bloating and irritable bowel syndrome.


Moreover, this medicinal herb supports healthy heart function by regulating blood pressure and cholesterol levels in the body. Besides that, crushed Roselle leaves are applied topically to cure boils, skin inflammations, ulcers and cracks. Similarly, due to the high content of Vitamin C in the leaves, this medicinal herb can promote healthy skin. Apart from that, Roselle leaves are also utilized to cure pain related to rheumatism.

Once again the author has introduced another herbal remedy and its health benefits. My mom often used to cook for us when we were young. It’s also known as the poor people’s dish those days. Now coming to know it’s health benefits and remedial herb which can prevent many illness, I am really grateful to my mom who has fed us with good nutritious dishes which has helped me to keep or to live a healthy lifestyle. Now that I know about this herb, I will cook for my family this herb and share with my friends. The juice of these leaves are also used to polish bronze utensils.
