Yarrow Flower
Achillea millefolium, commonly known as the yarrow flower, is an ancient medicinal flower renowned for its protective properties and health benefits. This medicinal flower originates from Europe and Asia, with evidence of its use dating back approximately 60 000 years from Neanderthal sites. Although it was discovered growing in these regions, it is now widely cultivated around the world. Yarrow flower thrives in sunny climates and prefers dry, well-draining soil.

It is highly tolerant of poor, sandy or rocky soils and is drought-resistant. Achillea millefolium is a resilient, fragrant medicinal flower from the Asteraceae family. It can grow up to 1 metre tall and features a tall stem with fern-like leaves that have a pungent odour. The leaves can grow up to 20cm long and are divided bipinnately or tripinnately. The flowers resemble miniature daisies, featuring a yellow centre surrounded by 5-6 white to pinkish petals. These flowers are arranged in dense, flat-topped clusters, with each cluster containing around 10-40 small flower heads.

How Yarrow Flower is Used in Traditional Medicine
Now, let's explore how this ancient medicinal flower protects you from the inside and outside. Yarrow flower is famous for its use in wound healing. Historically, this medicinal flower was used as a military remedy to stop bleeding from injuries and wounds. Similarly, Native Americans utilized yarrow flower to heal wounds, soothe aches and reduce fever.

Yarrow flower is also used in other parts of the world as a cooling agent to treat fever.
Moreover, yarrow flower is applied topically to the skin to cure rashes, acne, eczema, and dermatitis. Besides that, dried yarrow flower is blended with water or honey and consumed to promote bile flow, relieve stomach ache or treat indigestion. Aside from that, yarrow flowers are also used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding and pain related to menstruation.

4 Yarrow Flower Evidence-Backed Health Benefits

1. Antioxidant properties
Research done on yarrow flower shows that this medicinal plant is rich in compounds such as flavonoids, which help protect cells from oxidative stress and phenolic acids, compounds shown to help prevent lipid peroxidation. Therefore, yarrow flower helps lower the development of chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, cancer and many more.

2. Reduce inflammation
Yarrow flower exhibits promising potential to reduce inflammation in the human body, as studies conducted on this medicinal flower demonstrate the inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators such as cytokines and prostaglandins. As a result, this further supports its role in reducing the risk of developing chronic illnesses.

3. Anti-microbial properties
Several studies done on Yarrow flower indicate that this medicinal plant has the ability to suppress both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, highlighting its antimicrobial properties.

4. Wound healing
Yarrow flower’s prominent use in traditional medicine for healing wounds is further validated by modern science. Several studies propose that the bioactive compounds in yarrow flower stimulate collagen synthesis (the process by which the body produces collagen, a protein that helps strengthen and support tissues) and angiogenesis (a process by which new blood vessels develop to deliver nutrients and oxygen, supporting tissue growth and healing), subsequently enhancing the healing process.

All in All
Achillea millefolium, commonly known as the yarrow flower, is an ancient medicinal flower notable for its protective properties and health benefits. That said, this flower can nourish and protect you from the inside and the outside.
