Red poha (red rice) or aval puttu is a traditional South Indian sweet dish made from red flattened rice (poha), steamed into a soft, oval-shaped dish. This red rice gets its colour from natural anthocyanin content (health benefits include anti-inflammatory, anti-aging and anti-tumour properties) in the bran layer. Red rice retains its bran layer, which is rich in nutrients and antioxidants.
Ingredients: 150g red aval, 150ml boiled water, 2 cardamom seeds, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 4 tablespoons of grated/desiccated coconut. Method: 1. Fry the red aval with cardamom seeds for 5 minutes in a pan. 2. Grind the fried red aval coarsely in a dry spice grinder. 3. Add boiled water to the mixture little by little in a bowl and stir until there are no lumps using a fork. Add the sugar too while stirring. 4. Let it cool for 15 minutes. After that, add the coconut and steam it for 5-7 minutes. 5. Dish out and enjoy.
