Written By: Vivian BenjaminA Brief History of Herbal Medicine
Herbal medicine is “the knowledge, skills and practices based on the theories, beliefs and experiences indigenous to different cultures, used in the maintenance of health and the prevention, diagnosis, improvement or treatment of physical and mental illness”. (WHO) Since the dawn of time, humans have always used herbs in preparing and cooking food, to treat illness and for wound healing. However, after the emergence of modern medicine, the use of medicinal plants has been declining, especially in developed countries. Nevertheless, the practice of using herbs to treat diseases was not entirely forgotten or lost, as some rural places have continued to cultivate them. Presently, incorporating herbs in daily life for good health and well-being is rising internationally. The statistic displays that approximately 80% of people around the world tend to use herbs or natural products to heal illnesses. Moreover, in some countries, herbal medicine is part of the healthcare system. The Aromatic Healer In this article, I will share with you about lemongrass, the aromatic healer and how it can nourish you from the inside and outside. Cymbopogon or as it is commonly called lemongrass, is an aromatic perennial grass belonging to the family Poaceae. This plant is cultivated predominantly in the tropics and sub-tropics of Asia, Africa and America. Lemongrass grows as tall grass, having rhizomes and densely tufted fibrous roots. It has a green slightly leathery leaf that appears in dense clusters on short underground stems. The name Cymbopogon comes from the Greek words "kymbe" (boat) and "pogon" (beard), referring to the flower spike shape. As the name spells it, this medicinal herb has a lemon scent and is used in cooking and essential oil. Lemongrass essential oil is crucial in manufacturing perfumes, soaps, and detergents. Furthermore, lemongrass herb leaves can be used in rejuvenating herbal teas, whereas the stems can be used in curries, soups, fish, and meat products as flavouring. How Lemongrass Nurtures Your Body from the Inside 1. Relieves cough and nasal congestion Cough and nasal congestion can happen to anyone and is a common minor illness. I'm glad you found out about the different benefits of lemongrass. Happy to be of service... Plus, it's good that you incorporate the herb into your daily diet. But try increasing the consumption as you mentioned. There are plenty of ways you can cook lemongrass; toss it into a soup or vegetables and add it to your meat dishes as a flavouring.
